Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: MTD for ITSA Support

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is one of the biggest changes to the UK tax system in a generation — and if you are a sole trader or landlord, it is going to affect you.

From April 2026, HMRC is replacing the traditional Self Assessment tax return with a new digital system. Instead of filing once a year, you will be required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software, followed by a final declaration at the end of the year.

At Maynard Johns, we specialise in helping sole traders and landlords navigate Making Tax Digital for Income Tax with confidence. From choosing the right MTD software to managing your quarterly submissions, we are here to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Who Needs to Comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

You will need to comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax if you are a sole trader or landlord currently submitting a Self Assessment tax return. The changes are being rolled out in phases based on your income level:

  • From April 2026 — sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000
  • From April 2027 — those earning over £30,000
  • From April 2028 — those earning over £20,000

What Do You Need to Do To Comply?

To comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you will need to:

Edward and Ashley went above and beyond when completing our recent VAT return. The accounts arrived with them on Tuesday, the VAT return was submitted on the Friday. Amazing service. Thankyou. We highly recommend.

“I contacted Maynard Johns when I was having problems closing a small business.

They were very understanding of my lack of knowledge in this arena and guided me through it professionally and thoughtfully. They explained everything in a way that I could understand and prepared all the paperwork I needed speedily and without error.

I would wholeheartedly recommend them for any accounting work big or small.

Thank you for relieving this burden.”

I have been using Maynard Johns for 5 years and have been consistently impressed with their knowledge and customer service.

Jane Maynard is always available and her advice has proven to be both pragmatic and tax efficient.

I’m look forward to a long term relationship with Jane and the team at Maynard Johns. I would have no hesitation in recommending Maynard Johns to anyone wanting good sound financial advice, regardless if you are a sole trader or the owner of a large portfolio of businesses.

I just wanted to take a moment to say moving accountants was the best thing we have ever done as a business and as individuals. The help and support Manard Johns provide is exceptional.

In particular I want to personally recognise Edward, Natalie and Bridgette. They are an asset to the firm.

I started using Maynards about 4 months ago for my small business as I felt the firm I was using was overcharging, did not explain things in a clear and concise manner and ultimately did not really care about me and my business. I am delighted to report that Maynards have proven to be a highly professional firm, charging reasonable fees and most importantly doing a great job.

I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone that is looking for a firm of accountants.

Maynard Johns, Edward to be precise has been our accountant since we moved to the area and setup our business back in 2008. We always feel excited to have our annual sit down with Edward to evaluate our business together.

They are straight talking and totally passionate about supporting our small local business. After our meetings we always feel pumped and ready to take on another year with vigour, exactly what you want from your accountant…let’s not forget jelly babies too!

We call upon them to review future business plans; again, they offer the same enthusiasm and passion for new ideas with excellent advice and service provided. We have recommended many friends to switch accountants and they too are over the moon with the service. We could not recommend highly enough.

Very efficient, leave no question unanswered. Could not be happier with the service we receive.

As a company that prides ourselves on customer service we have very high standards. These have been met and exceeded many times. Couldn’t recommend more.
