Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is one of the biggest changes to the UK tax system in a generation — and if you are a sole trader or landlord, it is going to affect you.
From April 2026, HMRC is replacing the traditional Self Assessment tax return with a new digital system. Who Needs to Comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
You will need to comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax if you are a sole trader or landlord currently submitting a Self Assessment tax return. The changes are being rolled out in phases based on your income level:
- From April 2026 — sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000
- From April 2027 — those earning over £30,000
- From April 2028 — those earning over £20,000
