Not for Profit & Charity Accountants
Charity Accountants in Devon & Cornwall
Maynard Johns are charity accountants based in Devon and Cornwall. We help trustees, treasurers and managers keep their finances in order, meet their reporting duties and make clear decisions about the future.
Running a charity or community organisation takes a lot of time and goodwill. The accounts shouldn’t add to the worry.
Accounting for charities and not-for-profits
Charities have their own accounting rules, and they are different from those of an ordinary business. Money given for a specific purpose has to be tracked separately. Trustees need to understand the numbers. Funders often want detailed reports.
Our team includes an accountant with a diploma in charity accounting, so you can talk to someone who knows the sector. We explain things in plain English, whether you are a small village group or an established charity with paid staff.

Charity Accounting Questions
Does my charity need an independent examination or an audit?
It depends on your income, your assets and what your governing document says. Some charities need an audit, some need an independent examination, and some have simpler requirements. We’ll look at your situation and tell you what applies to you.
What is the difference between restricted and unrestricted funds?
Unrestricted funds can be spent on anything that supports your charity’s aims. Restricted funds have been given for a specific purpose, such as a grant for a new building, and must be spent and reported on separately. Getting this right is one of the most important parts of charity accounting.
Can a charity reclaim VAT?
Charities don’t get automatic VAT relief. Some purchases and activities qualify for reduced or zero rates, and some income is exempt, but the rules depend on what your charity does. We can look at your activities and tell you where you stand.
Can you help with Gift Aid?
Yes. We can help you set up your records so claims are accurate and easy to prepare, and so you are ready if HMRC asks questions.
Do you work with groups that aren’t registered charities?
Yes. We work with CICs, clubs, community groups and other not-for-profit organisations. Get in touch and we’ll talk through what you need.
